¿Qué es el síndrome de Down?
Es una alteración genética que se produce en el momento de la concepción y se caracteriza por una copia adicional del cromosoma 21. Sus causas aún son desconocidas.
Todas las personas con síndrome de Down tendrán algún nivel de discapacidad intelectual, un desarrollo y aprendizaje más lento que el típico, pero es importante tener en cuenta que cada persona con síndrome de Down es diferente y tiene diferentes habilidades y requiere diferentes apoyos.
La estimulación desde los primeros años de vida, facilita la adquisición de habilidades sociales, físicas y cognitivas que les permitirán disfrutar los beneficios de la inclusión educativa, social y laboral a lo largo de su vida.
Las personas con síndrome de Down son capaces de vivir vidas plenas y felices como miembros valiosos de sus comunidades.
Mitos & Realidades
Frecuentemente encontramos ideas erradas acerca de las personas con síndrome de Down que no son mas que mitos que se han ido perpetuando con el correr de los años. Saber diferenciar mitos de realidades permite que muchas oportunidades de participación se hagan evidentes para las personas con síndrome de Down .

El lenguaje es importante
El lenguaje que usamos refleja nuestra cultura creencias y sesgos de discriminación por eso es importante la terminología cuando nos referimos a una persona con síndrome de Down. Nuestras palabras ayudan a desterrar conceptos errados y a crear oportunidades desde las habilidades.
El término adecuado es persona con síndrome de Down o una persona que tiene síndrome de Down. Si te refieres a la forma como la persona se comunica y aprende puedes decir una persona con discapacidad intelectual o cognitiva.
Evita el lenguaje negativo como: es víctima, padece, sufre de síndrome de Down.
Las personas con síndrome de Down no son por definición: “especiales”,
“ángeles”, “pobres” o “desafortunadas”.
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Que ocasiona el síndrome de Down?
- El síndrome de Down es causado por una copia adicional del cromosoma 21 en todas las células del cuerpo. Ocurre en la concepción. Esto sucede al azar y no hay nada que una persona haga o deje de hacer que pueda producirlo. No hay culpables.
¿ Los bebes con síndrome de Down siempre nacen de mujeres mayores?
Estadísticamente, la posibilidad de tener un hijo con síndrome de Down aumentará con la edad de la madre; sin embargo, alrededor del 70 % de los bebés con síndrome de Down nacen de madres menores de treinta y cinco años. Esto se debe a que las madres menores de treinta y cinco años tienen más hijos en general.
¿Cuántos tipos de síndrome de Down existen?
Existen tres formas en las que el cromosoma extra hace su presencia:
Trisomía Simple: aproximadamente el 95% de las personas con síndrome de Down presentan trisomía simple del par 21, esto significa que todas las células del organismo poseen 3 copias completas del cromosoma 21.
Translocación: en alrededor del 3.5% de las personas con síndrome de Down, presentan 2 cromosomas del par 21 completos, más un trozo más o menos grande de un tercer cromosoma 21 que generalmente se encuentra pegado o adherido a otro cromosoma de otro par.
Mosaicismo: en el 1.5% de los casos, el cromosoma extra no está presente en todas las células del organismo de la persona con síndrome de Down.
¿Hay diferentes grados de síndrome de Down ?
